Together with the touristic core regions Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg, Mecklenburgische Schweiz and the Mecklenburg Lake District/Mecklenburgische Seenplatte Rostock County surround the largest and most important Hanseatic city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania – Rostock. Tourism is a fast growing market and an important economic factor for Rostock County. In the past the municipalities, tourism companies and Rostock County have invested a great deal in the tourism infrastructure: e.g. in overnight accommodations, rural road construction, cycle, hiking and riding paths as well as signposting, rest areas and bathing jetties. The Grand Hotel Heiligendamm is situated in the oldest German seaside resort Heiligendamm, which represents the typical, white resort architecture of the Baltic Sea coast. The romantic ride with the nostalgic, steam driven narrow-gauge railway , Molli, running from Bad Doberan to Kühlungsborn is also a tourist magnet.
